Understanding Key Measures on the DP Overview

Learn how SpotLight calculates and displays DP metrics to help you assess student performance and trends.

The DP Overview screen in SpotLight provides essential measures to help educators interpret student progress at a glance. These measures are dynamic and update automatically when filters on the left pane are adjusted.

In this article, we'll break down each measure and show how filters impact the results.

1. Students Enrolled

The Students Enrolled measure shows the percentage of students fully enrolled in the selected cohort. It is calculated using two key variables:

  • Enrollment Count: The number of unique student IDs after all filters (e.g. subject, subject level, DP level) are applied.
  • Cohort Count: The total number of students defined by the Academic Year and Diploma Level filters.

The resulting percentage reflects how many filtered students are enrolled relative to the total cohort. For example, filtering by Economics and DP Level 2 will adjust this measure accordingly.

2. Average DP Score

The Average DP Score represents the mean performance of all students included in the active filters. It dynamically recalculates whenever you adjust filters such as Subject, DP Level, or Academic Year.

This enables you to pinpoint performance for specific segments, rather than viewing the entire cohort average.

You can hover over the i icon to view the formula at any time.

3. Comparison Measure

The Comparison Measure shows how the current cohort’s average DP score compares to the school’s historical average.

  • Current Average: The mean score across all students based on your selected filters.
  • School Historical Average: Calculated using all filters except the academic year, providing a consistent baseline for comparison.

For example, if your current Economics cohort’s average is compared against a historical average of 4.7, you can quickly assess whether current performance is trending above or below previous years.

You can hover over the i icon to view the formula at any time.
